Privacy policy
How Law Australia collects, uses, stores and protects your personal information.
Last updated: 21 October 2026
Our commitment
Law Australia (“we”, “us”, “our”) respects your privacy. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, and in keeping with our professional duty of confidentiality to clients.
What information we collect
The personal information we collect depends on how you deal with us. It may include:
- your name, address, email address and telephone number;
- details you provide in an enquiry about your legal matter;
- identification documents and information needed to verify your identity, for example for property transactions, notarial services, company lodgements or our anti-money laundering obligations;
- financial, property, business, tax and family information relevant to the services we provide;
- information about other people involved in your matter, such as family members, directors, beneficiaries or other parties.
Where it is relevant to your matter, we may also collect sensitive information, such as health information for an estate plan or power of attorney. We will only do so with your consent or where the law permits.
How we collect it
We usually collect personal information directly from you, for example when you submit an enquiry through our website, email or call us, or meet with us. We may also collect it from third parties where that is reasonable or required, such as government registers (including ASIC, NSW Land Registry Services and Revenue NSW), other parties’ representatives, your other advisers, or identity verification services.
Why we collect and use it
We collect, use and hold personal information to:
- respond to your enquiry and decide whether we can act for you, including checking for conflicts of interest;
- provide legal, notarial, conveyancing, tax and company services;
- verify identity and meet our legal and regulatory obligations, including under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth), conveyancing and land registry rules, and the professional rules that apply to solicitors;
- lodge documents and complete transactions on your behalf, for example through PEXA, ASIC or Revenue NSW;
- manage our practice, including billing, record keeping and insurance.
If you do not give us the information we need, we may not be able to respond to your enquiry or act for you.
Who we may disclose it to
We only disclose personal information for the purposes for which it was collected, with your consent, or where required or permitted by law. Depending on your matter, this may include:
- courts, tribunals and government agencies (such as ASIC, the ATO, Revenue NSW, NSW Land Registry Services and AUSTRAC);
- other parties to your matter and their representatives;
- barristers, experts, agents and other professionals we engage for your matter;
- electronic lodgement and settlement platforms such as PEXA;
- our service providers, such as IT, document storage and identity verification providers, who must keep the information confidential.
We do not sell personal information.
Overseas disclosure
For cross-border matters and notarial services, we may need to send information or documents to overseas lawyers, advisers, government authorities or other recipients, in the countries relevant to your matter. We will discuss this with you where it applies. Some of our service providers may also store information outside Australia.
Security and retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. We keep client files and records for as long as required by law and professional rules, which is generally at least seven years, and then destroy or de-identify them securely.
Our website
When you submit our enquiry form, the details you provide are sent to us by email so that we can respond. Our website uses embedded Google Maps and Google Fonts, which may collect technical information such as your IP address under Google’s own privacy policy. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Please do not include confidential information in an enquiry until we have confirmed that we can act for you.
Access and correction
You may ask to access the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete. We will respond within a reasonable time. In some cases the law allows us to refuse access, for example where giving access would breach another person’s privacy or legal professional privilege. If so, we will explain why.
